Citizens of all countries require a passport to enter Costa Rica, and children must have their own passports; they may not enter on their parents’ documents. It is important that your passport has at least 6 months remaining validity before the expiry date.

Visas are not required if you are a citizen of United States, Canada, the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel or South Africa. Citizens of these countries can stay a maximum of 90 days.  When you go through immigration, your passport will be stamped with an instant tourist visa with 90-day validity. If you plan on staying in Costa Rica for longer than 90 days, you should make arrangement to leave the country for at least 72 hours before re-entering. Remember that upon each entry you must show to Costa Rican immigration that you possess a valid plane or bus ticket for departure.
