In 1854, William Walker, a mercenary from the United States, decided to make Central America into a slave republic. President Juan Rafael Mora Porras of Costa Rica got the other Central American Countries to join forces to drive Walker out. The first and only Costa Rican military hero emerged as a result of this battle.
