Playa Pelada

Playa Pelada can be accessed via a footpath from the northern end of Playa Guiones, or via one of the two turnoffs from the main road half way between Playa Guiones and Nosara village. The area has a unique beachside landscape that is undulating and densely forested, adding a little suspense as you navigate your way to the beachfront.

Pelada Beach is a picturesque petite beach with rocky outcrops at some parts. There are blowholes and bat caves around the headland that is accessible at low tide. On a sunny day, glittering white sand, blue sky and shimmering waters make it irresistible for sunbathers. Thanks to the strict enforcement of environmental laws, homes and businesses are located away from the beachfront, leaving the beach line completely green and natural, teeming with birds, iguanas and monkeys.

Scattered along a few meandering dirt roads that lead to the beach there are private vacation rentals offered by North American and European owners, from quaintly furnished villas with private pools, ideal for small families, to large beach houses suitable for surf groups, all in a very private and low-key environment. In fact, most vacation rental homes are hidden from view by lush vegetation. Although the houses here do not offer ocean view, they are certainly within a short trot to the beach. Besides private rentals, a handful of cabina-style hotels and B&Bs operate here, while those located in the hilly north side offer a combined view of forest canopy and ocean.

At the latest count there are seven restaurants and bars operating in the vicinity, including the slightly upmarket restaurant in the La Aqua Viva hotel located on the main road. For grocery shopping, try Supermarket Nosara, located just before the Nosara airstrip to the north, or Dos Lorenas at the south side of Playa Guiones, either is about a 4-km drive away. For basic items a mini-market is available around the corner next to Pancho’s Restaurant. A new gas station and a bank have also recently opened on the main road close to the entry roads to Playa Pelada.
