Playa Guiones

It is said that Playa Guiones is the only enclave in Costa Rica where foreigners outnumber ticos by nine to one. Whether it is true, the community certainly has an exclusive feel to it, besides being a bit hip and stylish. The prominence of the Nosara Yoga Institute also adds a mystic tinge to the ambiance.

Playa Guiones offers three unbroken miles of white sand on a flat and wide breadth which is a feast for the eye. The clear blue waters and the cleanliness on both sides of the beach line befit its title of being an ecological blue-flag beach. Thanks to environmental law enforcement, homes and businesses are located at least two hundred meters from the water edge, thereby preserving its pristine environment.

Well loved by both beginner and expert surfers for its consistent waves year round, Playa Guiones is no less attractive for those who simply want to relax and chill-out. The extensive beach offers plenty of room for sunbathers, strollers and cyclists. At low tide it is possible to cycle on the beach all the way to the southern end, where you'll find tide pools that are large enough to snorkel in. It is also possible to walk on the beach all the way to the northern end and then trek over the headland to Playa Pelada, which offers an interesting contrast to Playa Guiones.

In the forested area behind the beach, visitors will find surf shops, art galleries, souvenir stores, boutiques, real estate offices, mini-markets, restaurants, cafes, hotels, and tour agents offering various activities and excursions, including visits to the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge and the Nosara Biological Reserve, kayaking jungle rivers, whale and dolphin watching, deep sea fishing, snorkeling and canopy adventures.

Scattered amidst the lush vegetations behind the beach, a great number of vacation rental homes offer the perfect base for a low-key beach vacation, for a wide range of budget. Staying in one of these vacation homes would almost guarantee an easy walk to the beach and town amenities.

Playa Guiones is 15 km from the turnoff from the paved road to Playa Samara. From San Jose it will take 5 hours on average; from Liberia, about 3 hours. Either way the city of Nicoya serves as the gateway; from Nicoya it is a pleasant drive until you reach the Nosara turnoff. It has been reported that plans are underway to pave the road to Nosara by 2012.
